Polémica causó el alcalde de la acomodada comuna de Las Condes, Francisco De La Maza, al decir que en Chile deberían existir cárceles para menores de edad por la inutilidad del Servicio Nacional de Menores.
En entrevista con La Tercera el edil sostuvo “nosotros debiéramos tener cárceles para menores de edad” al ser consultado por el aumento de este segmento de imputados.
Sus dichos fueron repudiados en la red social Twitter y también fueron criticados por la directora del Sename, quién manifestó que “los programas de reinserción sí existen” agregando que “él como alcalde podría tener programas de reinserción social y laboral para infractores de ley”.
A nivel local una autoridad que también le respondió a Francisco De La Maza, fue el alcalde de Quillota Luis Mella (DC).
Fue a través de su cuenta de Twitter que edil señaló que “estoy en completo desacuerdo con crear cárceles para niños, inclusión social,mejor educación, más oportunidades, este es el camino”.
A eso del mediodía de este domingo Mella agregó que “trabajo con drogadictos en rehabilitación, muchos han cometido delitos, responden con alegría y esperanza al darles una mano cariñosa”.
Insistiendo en uno de los sellos de su gestión, la autoridad quillotana finalmente manifestó: “Cómo explicar la experiencia transformadora del amor en la salud y la educación. Los enfermos mejoran más rápido y los alumnos aprenden más”.

Una cárcel para niños es forjar en un recinto penitenciario a futuros delincuentes, es una medida demasiado extrema que atenta contra los derechos del niño y que no tiene sentido; estoy de acuerdo con el Alcalde Mella, que como sociedad debemos preocuparnos mucho mas de los niños, no olvidemos que ellos son nuestro futuro, es decir estamos encarcelando a nuestro futuro, estamos quitando el bien mas preciado a un ser humano que es su libertad desde pequeños; deberíamos mejor encarcelar a sus progenitores por el abandono de estos niños o a quienes tienen responsabilidades sobre ellos, como criarlos, educarlos, guiarlos por el buen camino, darles amor y no lo hacen……muy bien Alcalde Mella por levantar su voz….
